Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Sarnia, ON

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is what you may think of as traditional talk therapy. It’s a therapeutic approach that supports people in changing their mindset and behaviours by adjusting thought patterns.

If you’ve been feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or are looking to improve your overall mental health, our team of experienced counsellors can work with you to challenge your limiting beliefs and overcome negative thought patterns.

What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy?

CBT is an evidence-based therapy method that helps you identify and explore how your thoughts, feelings and behaviours are all connected. Through talk therapy, you and your counsellor will identify and analyze unhealthy or unhelpful patterns. Once you’ve gained a better understanding of how your thinking or behaviours may be causing you harm, you’ll work through strategies and skills to build more positive responses.

CBT works on the belief that how we interpret an event is more impactful than the event itself. We can’t change the fact that a negative or traumatic event occurred, but by altering how we think about the event, we can change our perception into something less harmful.

When we break down these negative events with the support of a counsellor and feel safe to look at them from all angles, we can reinterpret them and start to build a new system of beliefs around them. This takes away the power of the negative event and gives you back control of your thoughts and behaviours.

At Great Lakes Neurofeedback & Counselling, we believe healing happens through community and connection. By examining your limited or negative beliefs in a non-judgmental, safe space, you can develop the tools and resources to thrive.

AREAS THAT THERAPY CAN SUPPORT YOU

CBT is a very common type of therapy and has been used to help many different mental health conditions. Some of the conditions most commonly treated by cognitive behavioural therapy are:

  • Depression

  • Anxiety

  • Bipolar Disorder

  • Panic Disorder

  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

While CBT has been shown to support these different mental health diagnoses, you don’t need to be suffering from a diagnosed mental health condition to seek support and see improvement through CBT.

Many individuals seek CBT counselling simply because they are looking to improve their mental health and gain more control over their thoughts, emotions, and behaviours.

If you’re looking to learn practical skills to improve your day-to-day life, overcome personal challenges, or simply feel more confident and stable in your mental well-being, CBT can be a good option for you as well.

What To Expect From a CBT Session

When you reach out to our clinic, we’ll start with a consultation call to get to know you and understand your needs and goals and answer any questions you have. If after our call you’re ready to move forward, we’ll complete an intake process so we can best match you with a counsellor.

During your first session, your counsellor will get to know you and together, you’ll work out a plan for the best course of treatment. CBT is a collaborative effort so it’s important you and your counsellor can work together in a safe and trusting way.

Throughout your sessions, your counsellor will help you work to break down negative thought patterns and look at them from different perspectives. When you can analyze these thoughts safely and without judgment, you can begin to re-evaluate them and start looking at them in a new, more balanced way. You’ll also have space to look inward at things that you may have avoided thinking about in the past and face these with the guidance of your counsellor.

Throughout the CBT process, you will learn strategies for new ways of thinking. To see the most effective results, you’ll be asked to practice these strategies outside your sessions and work to apply them to your everyday life. Through practicing these strategies and with the support of your counsellor, you’ll develop the skills to overcome problems on your own and take charge of your thoughts and behaviours.
